Who are Alzheimer's Heroes

At the heart of Alzheimer's Heroes is a vibrant and supportive community of individuals united by a common purpose.

Here, you'll find a safe space to share your stories, connect with others who understand your journey, and find strength in solidarity.

Together, we'll celebrate victories, lend a listening ear, and provide a shoulder to lean on during the toughest of times.

Through our platform, we'll fundraise, raise awareness and inspire others to join us in our campaign. Alzheimer's Heroes empowers individuals to make a tangible difference in the fight against Alzheimer's Disease.

Alzheimer’s Heroes was founded by George Sotiri who was inspired to run his first marathon in London 2023, following the passing of his Dad, Andrew (aged 65), after a 7 year battle with Alzheimers Disease.

The success of running the London Marathon resulted in George raising the highest amount for an ARUK runner that year, and showed George the power of community and the support of family and friends.
This year George has set the challenge of running 6 marathons in 6 different countries in one year to help spread and raise awareness for Alzheimer's, however he is on a mission do more than just run marathons.

Instead he wants to inspire real change and ignite a movement. That's why he has launched Alzheimer's Heroes, a platform dedicated to bringing people together to participate in fundraising, share experiences, find support, and take action in the fight against Alzheimer’s.

George hopes to inspire more people to be physically and socially active as this could help decrease the risk of Alzheimer's disease.

Alzheimer's Heroes is a catalyst for change,

it's a movement fuelled by the power of community and the strength of collective action.

Together, we'll shine a light in the darkness of Alzheimer's, inspiring hope, fostering resilience, and ultimately, changing lives.

Our story

How the fundraising story started

  • Every 3 minutes dementia steals a happily ever after. Research is our only chance of changing the ending for people affected by Alzheimer's.
My fundraising story started in November 2022 when my whole world changed. My father Andrew, a pillar of strength, succumbed to a seven-year battle with Alzheimer's at the age of 65.

Witnessing someone as young as my father succumb to Alzheimer's was devastating to see. Beyond memory loss and confusion, Alzheimer's brought simple challenges like the struggle to perform everyday tasks and communicate. Failing to recognise love ones and the inability to express himself. Dad was my hero and slowly we was losing him day by day. The reality is you gradually see someone dying before your eyes and there is nothing you can do about it.

The heartache of watching my dad, just 57, grapple with Alzheimer's is intensified by the fact that, currently, there's no cure for this relentless disease. Alzheimer's doesn't discriminate by age, and Dad's journey was a painful reminder that it can affect anyone, not just the elderly.
It's a stark reality that, despite being one of the biggest killers in the UK, there's no cure in sight. In fact, a person develops dementia every three minutes, and Alzheimer's Research UK (ARUK) is tirelessly working to change that. With your support, we can fund groundbreaking research to find a cure and bring hope to countless families facing this heart-wrenching journey. Let's shatter the myth that Alzheimer's only impacts older individuals and join hands to make a difference.
The void left by his departure became the catalyst for a journey— a journey fuelled by love, loss, and an unwavering determination to make a difference.
  • The London Marathon 2023
In 2023, I pledged to run the London Marathon in my father's honour to help find a cure. With every step, I carried his memory, his courage, and the collective hope that, together, we could push the boundaries of what's possible in the fight against Alzheimer's. The support from my family, friends and the wider community was overwhelming. Collectively, we were able to raise an incredible amount of money for Alzheimer's Research UK.

The experience of running The London Marathon became a beacon of light in my darkest hour, illuminating a path forward amidst the shadows of grief. It showed me that even in the face of loss, there is hope to be found, strength to be gained, and love to be shared.
  • The Road to Six Marathons: My ARUK 2024 challenge
The drive to continue fundraising is fuelled by a stark reality I, a father of two, could find myself in my father's position in two decades. With no cure currently available, my mission is clear: to be as proactive as possible in helping fundraise for ARUK to help find a cure.

This year I have set the challenge of running 6 marathons in 6 different countries in one year to help spread and raise awareness for Alzheimer's, however I'm on a mission to do more than just run marathons. I want to inspire real change and ignite a movement. That's why I've launched Alzheimer's Heroes, a platform dedicated to bringing people together to share their experiences, find support, and take action in the fight against Alzheimer's.
